At Christmas, play and make good cheer…

“At Christmas, play and make good cheer for Christmas comes but once a year.” – Thomas Tusser.

There’s nothing quite like the sound of a brass group playing Christmas carols, but what Christmas carol are these hardy musicians playing? It’s quite easy when you consider that we are halfway through the coldest season. Their fingers were getting colder by the minute. No gloves on so they only have themselves to blame. In between playing they have a good old moan about the weather, especially the icy wind. There had been snow, and then more snow, and would you believe it, even more snow fell on top of that. The earth was as hard as the brass of their instruments. That’s probably why their feet were cold too. Nevertheless they put their hearts into it and gave it their all.

As the final verse summarises very nicely…

What can I give Him,
Poor as I am? —
If I were a Shepherd
I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man
I would do my part, —
Yet what I can I give Him, —
Give my heart.

“Christmas is a season not only of rejoicing but of reflection.” Winston Churchill.
