Stepping out on the new boardwalk

On the last day of 2025, and in need of fresh air and exercise, we took the short drive into Burton to explore the recently completed boardwalk on the Trent Washlands. It’s part of a general redevelopment of the area which will make more of the river and its proximity to the town centre. The area is effectively a floodplain and for much of the year is muddy or flooded and consequently often inaccessible to pedestrians.  The ground has now been subtly landscaped to improve the wetland and provide a natural looking habitat and general improvement to the flood defence system.

The old Bass Brewery water tower in the background.
Yes that is thin ice on the water. It was a very cold morning.
Not the river Trent but a deliberately created flood area which the boardwalk crosses.
