On the last day of 2025, and in need of fresh air and exercise, we took the short drive into Burton to explore the recently completed boardwalk on the Trent Washlands. It’s part of a general redevelopment of the area which will make more of the river and its proximity to the town centre. The area is effectively a floodplain and for much of the year is muddy or flooded and consequently often inaccessible to pedestrians. The ground has now been subtly landscaped to improve the wetland and provide a natural looking habitat and general improvement to the flood defence system.

Beautiful, well thought out photos John and I love the mirror images in the water. Thanks also for the information on the the Trent Washlands.

Thanks Suzette, yes I think this will become an all-weather walk which will change with the seasons, each one with something new to offer.

A great idea, but am I being pessimistic in imagining it may become a favourite place for skateboarders, stunt bikes and electric scooters?

Yes I know what you mean Peter. We will see. I quite like the idea of something more sedate like a purpose build electric land train!

What a lovely area, and how sensible to build a boardwalk.
