For well over 40 years we have lived less than 10 miles from this place, but we hadn’t actually visited it until one beautiful sunny day in June this year. I must admit we weren’t quite sure what to expect and if you look up the location on w3w you may understand why. We knew there was a cafe on site, in fact no ordinary cafe but the ‘World Peace Cafe’ so we decided to give it a try thinking that we could always just have a quick cup of coffee and leave.

The main drive to the building was an impressive avenue of sequoia trees and we could see that the surrounding grounds looked very pleasant and well maintained. We headed straight to the courtyard cafe which is staffed by volunteers. A friendly volunteer assured us that we could stay as long as we liked and could wander anywhere in the grounds and this was confirm by two other customers who were obviously regular visitors.

We drank our coffee and explored the surroundings, and yes, there was definitely an atmosphere of peace and tranquility here. What may have been ‘a quick cup of coffee and leave’ turned into a most enjoyable two hour visit. Before we left we looked inside the main building which had a shop and bookstore and another helpful volunteer told us more about the centre. We said we would go back another time and perhaps try some of the food on offer.
To date we haven’t returned but the winter promotion states ‘If you love a walk in beautiful landscapes why not come along. Our World Peace Cafe and Bookstore are open as usual. PS: cosy warm fire in the cafe ready to warm you up!’ It’s very tempting!
