What is what3words?
A few months ago I downloaded the what3words app but have only just started to explore the full capabilities of it. If you are unfamiliar with the app, it provides a way to describe a precise location using just three words. As such, it could be used to locate you if you are lost, give a precise meeting point for a group of friends, or give more exact directions to your house if the postcode is not that accurate. It is also increasing being used by emergency services, delivery companies and motor breakdown/rescue services. It uses GPS to find your location.
The developers have divided the world into 3 metre (10 foot) squares and given each one a unique identifier made from three words. If you like statistics there are 57 trillion squares and 40000 words in the English version. It is available in 50 languages.
The words for a location are completely random and the adjacent square grid will have three completely different words. I have put this to the test and have yet to hit the jackpot and find three words which are appropriate to the location. I will keep looking and post about it if I find one and perhaps even write the narrative based on the words!
In the meantime here are some photographs taken earlier today and I will only use what3words to describe the location. If you would really like to know, look it up! In short, if you have not already done so, I suggest you download the free app or use the website. There are stories of life saving rescues made possible by using the app.

I always have to make a short detour from the main path to photograph ‘The Hermitage’

The Robert Adam fishing pavilion. At least this gets two words – fish and banks of the river!

The Robert Adam bridge looking as splendid as ever in the afternoon sun.
Google lens kicked in a bit quick today just as I was enlarging the first image and it told me exactly where you were! 🙂

I was surprised by that too. Seems to have taken a while to take off and be used more widely.

I have tested it out when out walking, trying to map the squares using my phone. I got some very strange looks!

Thanks Graham, I discovered that you can add the words retrospectively so may do one or two in future blogs.
