At the beginning of July we did a walk in the grounds of Calke Abbey. From the main car park we took a footpath which ran alongside the deer enclosure and were almost instantly rewarded with these views of some of the deer. I quickly took out my phone thinking they would soon disappear but in fact they were quite content and happy to pose for me.

I captured a series of shots and a few weeks later I was able to use three of the photos to enter our village show ‘class 77 – three mounted photographs on a theme of your own choice’. (Incidentally, I am pleased to report that I won and received the life-changing prize money of £1).

We returned to the area earlier this week and again found the deer cooperative and enjoying their moments in the mid-September sunshine just as much as we were.

Beautiful photos. So peaceful and serene a setting. Congrats on the life-changing prize!!

What fabulous images, John. I was about to suggest you spend the prize on a lottery ticket, but I think they’re now twice that. I wonder if you can buy a lucky dip for £1.00?

Thanks Sue. Good job we enter for the fun of it and not the prize money!

This is Calke Abbey at its best. We’re not fond of the interior of the house – all those cases full of stuffed birds and animals are unwelcome echoes of an age best forgotten, at least from a conservation/wildlife perspective – but the grounds are a great place to get close to Nature.

Welcome to John’s Postcards. Although Calke is only 15 minutes down the road from us we have never been in the house. I suppose we ought to at least once just to say we’ve been, but as you indicate the grounds are well worth a visit any day. Some great walks around there.
